Commentary:
The news mentioned that fatigue specifically may have been a factor in this accident, which is indicative of a much larger problem in the trucking industry. Ultimately, truck drivers are hard working individuals trying to make a living, and are pushed very hard to make deadlines because tics of the clock can literally be measured in dollars and cents. This often leads to truck drivers pushing themselves far beyond both reasonable and legal limits to satisfy the people they’re working for. Truck drivers have federally mandated limits on how long they can be on the road, but sadly, many trucking companies use this federal maximum as a minimum expectation for their employees, and this is dangerous.
