Girl Crossing Street in San Antonio, TX Critically Injured by Truck Trying to Pass Traffic

San Antonio, TX — A young girl, 12 years old, was critically injured on Monday of this week (June 22, 2015) after she was hit by a pickup truck while crossing the street. This happened on Monday afternoon, in front of Frank Tejeda Middle School.

The 12-year old girl was attending a summer program at the school and was walking home when she tried to cross Evans Road. She was reportedly in a crosswalk at the time and was walking behind a group of other young students.

An SUV stopped to let the children pass, but a black pickup truck moved to the other lane to pass the SUV and crashed into the 12-year old girl. She was badly injured and had to be rushed to a hospital for treatment.

The driver of the truck, a woman, wasn’t injured and the police haven’t filed any charges just yet. At the last update, the 12-year old was in critical condition at University Hospital.

Commentary:

Before people start to blame this young girl for what happened, let me just say that it sounds an awfully lot like this pickup truck was being reckless that afternoon. Have the police announced any charges for this driver? Just because the summer break is ongoing doesn’t mean you should drive recklessly through a school zone, and I’m worried that’s what happened here. A “me-first” attitude causes more accidents than most people think, which is why it’s so important that aggressive, irresponsible drivers on the road ought to be held accountable so they don’t make the same mistake again.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
