Orange, TX — A worker died at the Orangfield High School today in Orange after being electrocuted in an accident. The man, 54-year old Tommy Moser, was working at the school with a crew to install some new A/C units when the accident happened.
This happened just today at about 2:00 p.m., and there’s not been a lot of information released yet. The news said that Moser was a part of a contracted crew and was working on a new A/C unity when he was somehow electrocuted.
He was taken to a hospital as soon as possible, but passed away a short time later this afternoon. Right now, the authorities are saying this was an accident, but haven’t given many details.

Commentary:
Some of the details here are going to need to be veryclosely examined because the first step is always to determine whether any kind of defect or malfunction caused the accident. The labor laws in Texas are generally restrictive when it comes to the options that victims of on-the-job accidents have — but it’s not completely hopeless. Most people have heard of workers’ compensation benefits and view them as a good thing, however they rarely are actually enough to cover any sort of serious accident or death on the job. The benefits are designed as sort of a bare-bones system, if you will, that mostly functions as a way to protect the employer from legal action. However, not every employer is required to sign up for workers’ compensation coverage, and if they don’t, any negligence-based claims that a person would normally have after being injured in an accident would apply. In other words, the employers takes off his “bullet-proof” vest when it comes to lawsuits and being held liable for workers hurt on the job.
I hope that brief explanation of workers’ comp laws in Texas is helpful, because it seems that not very many employers understand it that well and even fewer take the time to explain workers’ rights to their employees. I don’t really know what happened here or how it happened, but the more knowledgeable you are about this kind of thing, the harder it is for someone to take advantage of you.
