Police believe that alcohol caused this accident. If that’s true, then the driver needs to be held accountable for that, punished, and should make things right with the two individuals he’s hurt. But what if a bar were involved here, as well. What if the driver was drinking at a local bar, drank too much, and at the end of his evening, got in his car, drove off, and caused this crash.
States all across the country have laws forbidding bars from over-serving customers who are obviously intoxicated. Unfortunately, North Carolina does not. These laws are important because bars have a responsibility to their customers that goes past serving them margaritas after a hard day at the office. They have a responsibility to make sure that they’re not going to serve them so much alcohol that the first thing they do whenever they leave is get into an accident. Laws like this save lives. But not in North Carolina.
Hopefully, this is an area in which the state makes some progress in the coming years. It makes a difference. It holds people accountable. And it’s the right thing to do.
