Driver Hospitalized Following Box Truck Accident on I-5 in San Diego, CA

San Diego, CA — A woman was sent to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after an accident in San Diego, California, on Thursday, June 11, 2015. The accident happened on Interstate 5, near the intersection with Novel Drive, around 1:30 in the morning.

Police say that a box truck rear-ended a vehicle that had stalled out on the interstate. The collision trapped the driver inside the car. Emergency workers transported her to Scripps Memorial Hospital after she was extricated.

The force of the collision caused the box truck to roll over. However, the driver wasn’t seriously injured.

The accident is still being investigated.

I wish we knew a little more about what happened here. The accident happened around 1:30 in the morning, but the interstate isn’t completely unlit. Add that to the box truck’s own headlights, and the driver should have had a pretty good view of the road. If the victim’s car had stalled out, that implies that it was on the road for at least a minute or two before the accident happened. Why wasn’t the driver able to spot it and avoid the crash? Did the driver of the box truck have a good view of the road? Was he paying adequate attention? If anyone knows a little more about this accident, I’d be interested in hearing it.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
