Ortonville, MN — The driver of a dump truck was hospitalized after being rear-ended by a semi in Ortonville, Minnesota, on Wednesday, June 10, 2015. The accident happened on Highway 75.
Police identified the driver as 57-year-old Gary Haugen. Haugen was rear-ended a semi-truck being driven by Lee Ashburn. Emergency workers took Ashburn to Essentia Hospital. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.
Haugen also suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Ortonville Hospital.
The accident is currently under investigation.

This accident is a little different than most work accidents, because the driver involved was hurt by a third party. What does that mean? Well, anytime someone is hurt in a work accident, they’re going to be eligible for workers’ comp benefits. However, workers’ comp law will typically prevent an employee from filing a claim against their employer. However, those rules don’t apply whenever the accident was caused by a third party, as in this case. In those accidents, an injured employee has the right to pursue compensation by filing an injury claim. This claim would be separate from their workers’ comp claim filed with their employer, and wouldn’t affect any benefits they might receive.
