Flint, MI — Two motorists were hospitalized following a gas explosion in Flint, Michigan, on Saturday, June 6, 2015. The accident happened on the Dort Highway, near the railroad overpass, around 1:00 in the afternoon.
Work crews were digging in the area and hit a gas main that exploded, shooting flames over the overpass for more than three hours. Two motorists were hurt in the explosion and taken to Hurley Medical Center. At last report, they were listed in stable condition. Their names weren’t released.
Roads in the area were blocked for several hours until Consumers Energy was able to cut off the gas line.
It’s not clear exactly who the work crews that caused the explosion were working for.

It seems like an accident like this could easily have been avoided. If anyone had consulted the local energy company, they would have been able to find where the gas mains were located, and avoid an explosion that shot flames into the sky and put two people in the hospital. Unfortunately, no one had that much foresight. Now, who’s responsible? It seems as if some protocol here was ignored. However, it would be my guess that whether it was or wasn’t it’s ultimately unimportant. Someone made a mistake. People were hurt, and they can be held liable for it. That’s important. Holding them responsible for what they’ve done will hopefully ensure that something like this doesn’t happen again somewhere down the road.
