Youngstown, OH — There was an accident at the Vallourec Star plant this past Friday (June 5, 2015) that left a worker with injuries. Police didn’t release a lot of information, but said that a worker was cleaning the top of a crane when he lost his balance and fell to a landing below.
This happened in the afternoon, they said, at the plant’s location on MLK.
The worker was apparently atop the crane and cleaning some of the dust off when he accidentally stepped through an opening and fell. He landed on a surface below him, roughly 25-30 feet — not the entire distance to the ground.
He was rescued by firefighters, who had to use another crane to access the worker. He was presumably taken to a hospital, but it’s not clear how badly he was hurt.
In general, OSHA requires employers to give fall protection equipment to any worker who is going to be working more than 6 feet above the ground. However, it’s not clear if this worker had any kind of safety equipment or fall protection gear.
