Redmond, OR — Police said that a semi-truck driver was charged with reckless driving in Redmond after he failed to brake for a red light and rear-ended a Corvette, seriously injuring two teenage girls inside the Corvette. This happened on Sunday afternoon, June 7, at about 2:30 p.m.
A 19-year old girl was driving the Corvette along U.S. Highway 97 that afternoon while a 16-year old girl rode as front-seat passenger.
They stopped for a red light at Veterans Way, which is when a semi-truck behind them failed to brake in time and rear-ended the sports car. The semi-truck driver was identified as 31-year old Santokh Samra, who was later charged with careless driving by the local police.
After his semi-truck rear-ended the Corvette, it also crashed into a pickup truck and an SUV — though nobody in those cars was in life-threatening condition.
The teens in the Corvette, however, were airlifted to a nearby hospital and were seriously hurt. The reason Samra’s semi didn’t brake in time isn’t clear yet, but hopefully more information will be released later.

Just out of curiosity, I did a little research on this truck driver, because the news didn’t offer any kind for why he didn’t slow down in time. Well, I may have an idea. Just last year, this truck driver (if the info from the media is correct) appears to have been cited by police for hauling too much weight on a commercial truck. Now, hauling too heavy a load can be dangerous for a lot of reasons, but one of the biggest ones is that it significantly raises the brake time of the truck. That is, the brakes work much harder and take much longer to slow such a heavy vehicle down.
Is that what happened here? I honestly don’t know, but if this kind of thing is on the driver’s record, then what other things ought people to know about him? Does he have a history of accidents with his trucking company? How fast was he going when he hit the back of that Corvette? These are all good questions to start digging into things, but I have a feeling this may take a lot more investigation before it’s all said and
