Transit Bus Accident on Broad Street Leaves Woman Hurt in Providence, Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE, RI — Authorities have not yet named the woman that was hurt in an accident with a Public Transit Authority bus in Providence, Rhode Island on Wednesday, May 20th, 2015. Reports out of the New England area mentioned that the accident was reported at about 4:30 Wednesday afternoon.

Police said a 31-year-old woman was hurt when she was struck or run over by a Rhode Island Public Transit Authority bus on Broad Street. Officials think that the woman fell when the bus started to pull away from the stop as she was trying to board it.

The woman was taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries.

Officials are still investigating what happened at this time.

Commentary:

The fact that the news reported that the bus pulled away while the woman was still boarding tells us that there had to have been a lot that went wrong in this incident, if the news reports turn out to be true. How did the bus driver not see the victim as she was trying to board? Witnesses reported that the woman may have been knocking on the bus, so in addition to failing to seeing her in the mirrors, he failed to hear her as the bus pulled away. First of all, a bus has no business rolling away from a curb when there are people this close to the vehicle. Was the bus door still open? Was the woman visible in the mirrors? There is a lot of information reported in the news that makes me think that the bus driver, and by extension, the bus company may be responsible for what happened in this accident.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
