Defuniak Springs, FL — A woman and four children were hospitalized following an accident with a semi-truck in Defuniak Springs, Florida, on Tuesday, May 19, 2015. The accident took place at the intersection of Highway 90 and Highway 331.
Lucia Lavato was the driver of an SUV that turned in front of a semi-truck heading east on 90. The resulting collision sent the SUV into a third vehicle, and they both drove up onto the sidewalk.
Lavato was carrying three children at the time. They have been identified only as a 10, a 4, and a 7-year-old. The 10-year-old was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital, but was later taken to Children’s Hospital of Alabama.
Lavato and the other children were taken to Sacred Heart. Lavato required emergency surgery. Since then, authorities say that she and the other two children are listed as being in stable condition.
The driver of the semi was identified as 46-year-old Leonard St. John. He wasn’t hurt. The driver of the third vehicle was identified as 73-year-old Vonnie McBroom. He was also taken to Sacred Heart, treated and released.
The accident is being investigated.
