Route 12 Semi-Truck Crash Injures Robert Hemmingsen, Walpole Police Say

Walpole, NH — A truck driver from Michigan was injured in Walpole, New Hampshire after his semi-truck was in an accident this past Wednesday of last week, May 6, 2015. The news said that Robert Hemmingsen, 67, was injured after his semi-truck lost control along Route 12 and got into a wreck, which resulted in him being trapped inside the cab.

The details of how this crash happened actually haven’t been released yet, but the police were able to provide a few details.

They said that Hemmingsen was driving his semi-truck (owned by Specialized Transportation Enterprises in Vermont) and was headed along Route 12 last Wednesday in the early morning hours when something went wrong and he crashed off the side of the road.

Hemmingsen was trapped inside the truck’s cab and had to be rescued by emergency workers, who then took him to a nearby hospital. At the last update, he was in stable condition and had been treated for his injuries.

The cause of the accident, it appears, is still under investigation.

Commentary:

On a whim, I decided to look up this trucking company because it seems out of character for such an experienced truck driver to get involved in an accident like this one. Perhaps I’m wrong, but I did a little research anyway. What I found is that this Vermont-based trucking company is actually in the 85th percentile for vehicle maintenance violations, with a 0% being the best. That means for all the companies in the same safety event group, this small trucking company with only 14 trucks in their fleet ranks worse than 85% of them.

What does that tell me? Well, perhaps there was something wrong with this truck. Perhaps, instead of this accident being the truck driver’s fault, was actually the fault of a defective or worn-out truck? Mind you, I’m just working with the information provided to me by the news and the DOT, but this definitely seems to be worth investigating further.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
