Unity, PA — Last Wednesday, in rural Westmoreland County, three workers at the Whitney Stone Quarry mine were badly injured after what authorities are called a roof collapse happened. The news said that some workers were using underground portals last Wednesday, April 29, 2015 when a roof collapsed and caused a major shift in the air pressure, which knocked three workers to the ground.
Two of the workers were badly injured and had to be taken via medical helicopter to a nearby hospital, while the third was less seriously harmed and took an ambulance.
The exact cause of the accident isn’t quite clear, but the falling roof apparently created some kind of vacuum in the portal that caused the air in the chamber to “blast” around the workers.
No names have been released.
The mine is owned by Heidelberg Cement and since 2009, Hanson Aggregates has been the operator. Neither company has mentioned anything about why the accident happened, but expressed their condolences and commitment to getting to the bottom of this accident.
