Chicago, IL — A construction worker was hospitalized after a porch collapsed beneath him in Chicago, Illinois, on Saturday, May 2, 2015. The accident took place in the 2000 block of West Cermak Street.
The man was standing on the porch at the time of the accident, and fell to the street below. Reports say that the man suffered serious injuries, but that they weren’t considered to be life-threatening.
Emergency workers took the man to Stroger Hospital and he’s been listed in stable condition. Authorities have not released. the man’s name.
What caused the accident is unknown, although authorities say that the building has been roped off.

The man injured in this accident was a construction worker, so I’m going to assume that he had some official reason to be on the property. Pictures from the scene make it look like this building is in a bit of disrepair, so if I had to guess I would say that this accident is going to be covered by workers’ comp. Often, construction accidents can get a little tricky because of multiple companies doing work on the same property. If another company is found to have contributed to the accident in any way, then an injured worker would also have a potential claim against them, in addition to workers’ comp benefits. However, I’ve seen no evidence that that’s also the case here.
