Longview, TX — Five people were injured in an alleged drunk-driving accident in Longview, Texas, on Tuesday, April 21, 2015. The accident took place in the 3900 block of West Loop 281.

Police have identified Connie Jimmerson and Tashica Jimmerson as two of five individuals inside a 2006 Kia Sorento that was traveling west on Loop 281 when it was hit by a 2008 Kia Spectras being driven by Wanda McCowan. Police say that McCowan was traveling east on Loop 281 when she drove into the Sorento’s lane.

Following the accident, Connie and Tashica Jimmerson were both taken to Good Shepherd Medical Center, along with two children also riding inside the Sorento. Police say the children were not wearing seat belts.

McCowan was also injured and taken to Good Shepherd. Police believe she was intoxicated at the time and say she may be facing charges.

Commentary:

I have to wonder if the woman responsible for the accident was out at a bar before the crash. The time of day at which the accident took place make it likely. Something like this is important because Texas law forbids establishments that serve liquor from serving anyone who’s visibly intoxicated. The reason for this should be pretty obvious. People who are drunk have a greater chance of getting into an accident. Unfortunately, bars have a bad track record of actually following these laws. They’re often ignored. Sometimes people who should be cut off are over-served, and they go out and get into accidents. If it’s found that bar is involved in an accident like this, they can be held partially liable for the accident. Keep in mind, this is in addition to the drunk driver. They obviously shoulder some of the blame here. But so does the bar. Laws like this are trying to stop accidents like this from happening. Bars that ignore it are actively working against it, and should be held responsible.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
