Commentary:

Any time I see a tractor-trailer accident result in a fire, and believe me I see quite a few every day, I always implore finding out where the fire started. Why? Because there is a serious probability that the fire originated from the externally mounted gas tank on the truck. Many people are stunned to learn that tractor-trailer gas tanks are not mounted on the interior of the truck like they are with essentially every other vehicle out on the road. Instead, they are often bolted to the truck directly beneath the driver’s side. So to recap, there is a massive canister of combustible fluid bolted on the vehicle where there is almost guaranteed to be a human directly above. Does this sound like the safest possible way to do things? If the fire resulted in the driver’s injuries, and the fire originated from this poorly placed gas tank, the the truck manufacturer could bear a significant portion of the liability in this accident.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
