Park Crossing High School Student Dies after 18-Wheeler Accident on Malcolm in Montgomery, AL

Montgomery, AL — Early in the morning on Wednesday (April 15, 2015), a student from Park High School was struck and injured by an 18-wheeler truck, presumably while walking to school. The accident happened at about 7:00 a.m. along Malcolm Drive, police said, and the student was taken to a hospital, where they later passed away.

So far, no names have been released yet, but the accident is still being investigated.

The police confirmed that this happened along Malcolm Drive, near Taylor Road. The details of how the accident happened, however, are still unclear.

As of Wednesday evening, no charges have been filed against the truck driver, who was also remained unnamed.

Commentary:

I noticed that this area of the road is near some apartment complexes. Given the time of morning, doesn’t it seem likely that there would have been some students on or near that road, perhaps waiting for a bus? I’m saying that this truck driver probably should have been on high alert for pedestrians and kids running about, so I hope that distraction or driver inattention isn’t a factor here.

Obviously, the accident could have been entirely the pedestrian’s fault. It’s just that people tend to blame accidents on the victims in these kinds of situations, but it’s never good to jump to conclusions without getting all the facts first.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
