Omaha, NE — There was an accident in Omaha reported last Friday (April 10, 2015) that left a man on a motorcycle in critical condition. From the news reports, it looks like it happened at the intersection of 87th Street and F Street last Friday, when commercial box truck collided with the motorcycle. It’s not clear what happened yet, but the rider on the motorcycle had to be transported to a hospital with critical injuries.

One news report suggested that the box truck may have tried to make a left turn in front of the motorcyclist that day. The box truck had been driving west along F Street while the motorcycle was coming east.

As they neared 87th Street, the box truck may have been trying to turn south onto it when it drove in front of the motorcycle. So far, the police did rule out speed as a factor, but the real cause of the accident hasn’t been determined yet.

Commentary:

I want to highlight the importance of truck drivers paying attention to the road ahead of them, especially to motorcycles, pedestrians, and bikes. There have been studies done that suggest part of our brains sort of “ignore” motorcycles on the road because they’re not very common — at least not as common as other cars and trucks. The idea is that our eyes see a motorcycle in our mirror, but our brain doesn’t process it and we accidentally cause wrecks.

I don’t know what happened here, but it doesn’t sound like this motorcycle was speeding. Does that mean that the box truck driver wasn’t paying attention to the road? Does anyone actually know what happened here?

I’m sure the trucker didn’t mean to cause an accident that day, but there really needs to be an explanation for this because someone ended up in the hospital with some very serious injuries. At the end of the day, we need to make sure that (if the trucker was was the cause of the accident, that everything gets sorted out and that this doesn’t happen again. I always start with investigating the truck driver and making sure he was qualified to be behind the wheel in the first place.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
