Guy Pigg Killed by Motorcycle Accident with Jeep on Highway 217 in Canyon, TX

Canyon, TX — A local man died over the weekend, the police reported, after his motorcycle was unfortunately hit head-on by a Jeep. Police said that Yessica (Jessica) Delatorre, 27, may face charges after her Jeep tried to pass another car, but hit 61-year old Guy Wayne Pigg’s motorcycle instead. He was killed immediately in the accident.

This happened on Sunday afternoon at about 3:30 p.m., April 5, 2015. Pigg had been riding his motorcycle (a Harley-Davidson) west along Highway 217 that afternoon while Delatorre was driving east in her Jeep.

They were both about 8 miles from Canyon when Delatorre tried to pass another car on the highway and swerved into oncoming traffic. As she did so, both the Jeep and Pigg’s motorcycle swerved to avoid a collision, but could not.

The struck each other head and Guy Pigg was killed immediately while Delatorre was treated for minor injuries. She may dace charges later from the District Attorney.

Commentary:

In reality, charges from the D.A.’s office are only part of the potential consequences here. Even if the D.A. decides not to press charges or prosecute, I’d argue that the act of trying to pass another car without checking oncoming traffic is negligent in and of itself. Looking at that area (and West Texas as a whole), the roads are quite flat, so it’s likely that this man on the motorcycle would have been very much visible to the naked eye. Negligence like that can be addressed in a civil suit, obviously, which in Texas is filed by parents, siblings, or children of those who had passed away.

I’m not saying this because I think there’s a claim here or that anyone should hire an attorney, but I wanted to point out that charges from the D.A.’s office isn’t the only thing this driver may be facing.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
