Saul Vasquez Killed on Highway 87 by 18-Wheeler Truck in Sanford, NC

Sanford, NC — Earlier in March, a man from Fayetteville was killed several miles north of Spring Lake (near Sanford) after his pickup truck was in a wreck with an 18-wheeler. Police said that this happened at about 7:45 a.m. on the morning of Friday, February 28, 2015 and identified the man as Saul Vasquez, 30.

The accident happened just south of Sanford, about 10 miles north of Highway 24. Police said that Vasquez was driving his white pickup truck north along Highway 87 that morning when he was involved in a head-on crash with an 18-wheeler truck that was owned by Stout Trucking of Greensboro.

The accident trapped Vasquez inside his truck and he died at the scene, while the truck driver wasn’t harmed. The truck driver, identified as Dale Holt, later told police that Vasquez’s truck had slid on some black ice that had frozen over part of the highway and caused him to lose control.

This was supposed to be investigated some more, but it’s not clear if it was.

Commentary:

In doing some research about this accident and the trucking company that owned this truck, I had the feeling that I remembered the name Stout Trucking from somewhere. As it turns out, one of their drivers caused a major accident in Tobaccoville last October when he crashed his 18-wheeler into the back of stopped traffic and killed 3 people, injuring 8. The news later said it that 2 died and 1 was in critical condition, but the DOT said 3.

Now, that doesn’t have any bearing on what happened in this accident, but it does make me a little wary of the details reported by the news. After all, we just have the truck driver’s word that it was the other driver who lost control and swerved. Was an investigation done to check the facts? I’m not saying that we should be suspicious of this driver, but there should at least be due diligence done for the sake of the victim and his family.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
