Bicycle Accident in Jasper, TX, Injures 4-Year Old Girl, Alcohol Suspected

Jasper, TX — A 52-year old driver was backing up a car near the intersection of Dennis Drive and Burns Street in Jasper, Texas, when they hit and ran over a 4-year old girl. The accident happened on Friday, September 19, 2014, around 7:00 in the evening.

Police say that the driver — who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol — was backing up the car and hit the young girl, running her over. The driver then shifted gears, running over the girl a second time. She was taken to Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital with injuries to her arm and legs. Doctors have described her injuries as non-life-threatening.

The name of the driver has not been released, as police are currently investigating the accident. Police have said the man would most likely be charged with intoxicated assault.

Commentary

I thought it was interesting that the news article I was reading talked about this accident as if it was some simple whoopsy-daisy that just came out of nowhere before throwing in, in the very last sentence, that bit about the driver of the car allegedly being drunk at the time. I guess the writer skipped class the day they talked about burying the lede in journalism school. Bad reporting aside, it turns out that drinking and hitting someone with your car is a pretty big deal, and is going to have a big impact on how this young girl receives compensation for her injuries. It opens up the possibility of dealing with a bar, instead of just the driver, and increases the likelihood that the parents are going to have a tougher time when dealing with the driver’s insurance company.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
