Gary Isom, Susan Isom Killed in 18-Wheeler Accident on U.S. 6 in Clay County, Nebraska

Clay County, NE — Two people were killed and two were injured in an accident in Clay County, Nebraska, on Thursday, August 28, 2014, when an 18-wheeler crashed into their car. The accident took place at the intersection of Nebraska 14 and U.S. 6.

Police say that Gary and Susan Isom were traveling east on 6 and that the truck was traveling south on 14. The truck failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with the Isom’s vehicle.

Authorities pronounced the two dead at the scene of the accident. In the vehicle with the Isom’s at the time were their teenaged son and their daughter, who’s in her 20s. Both survived the accident and were taken to a hospital in Lincoln.

Police have arrested the driver of the 18-wheeler. His name has not been released.

Commentary

It would seem that if there was one cardinal rule handed down to truck drivers, it would be to be aware of what’s going on on the road around you. This would include things like other drivers, as well as traffic lights and signs. It just seems like kind of a no-brainer. So I have to shake my head whenever I hear about a truck driver running a stop sign. It’s not as if the things are hard to spot. I have to ask myself, if the driver wasn’t looking at the road, what was he looking at?

Unfortunately, no matter how bad this looks for the truck driver — and it does look bad — the trucking company will still defend it. Commercial vehicles are required to carry a large amount of insurance, and after an accident like this, they just can’t leave that money sitting there on the table. It affects their bottom line, so they have to defend the driver. Hopefully, they’ll still do right by the victim’s children, because if the news reports are accurate, they are most definitely in the wrong.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
