Commentary
News reports don’t offer many details on what caused the accident. They say the 18-wheeler was coming out of a private driveway when the accident took place. I think this is a situation in which we need to look at the decisions made by the truck driver. 18-wheelers aren’t really the types of vehicles that can make sharp, hairpin turns. We’ve all seen them before. Turning out of a driveway is going to take a few moments. Had the driver checked to make sure the street was clear, that he’d actually have the time to make the turn? If a truck is several hundred feet down the road, it’s going to have time to slow down. So we have an accident in which either the driver of the pickup truck or the 18-wheeler wasn’t watching the road. Fortunately, there will be evidence at the scene of the accident that will help determine who the liable party is. The police report is going to be important, and obviously, interviewing any witnesses who saw the accident occur.
