UPDATE: Fu Duan Killed in Suspected Alcohol Related Accident in Monterey Park, California

MONTEREY PARK, CA — One driver is dead, and his passenger is in the hospital after a crash in Monterey Park, California on Saturday, May 2nd, 2014, according to the article from The Pasadena Star News.

Representatives from the California State Police currently have reason to believe that 21-year-old Fu Duan was killed when the Ferarri 458 Italia he was driving was struck by a Hyundai Accent while driving near the intersection of Garvey and New around 2:00 Saturday morning.

Scene of the Accident

Authorities pronounced Fu Duan dead at the scene when they arrived. The driver of the offending vehicle was identified in the report as 28-year-old Omar Placenicia, who potentially faces drunk driving related charges in connection with the accident.

Investigators from the California Highway Patrol is assisting with the crash investigation.

Commentary:

When you combine factors like a youthful drinking culture, a spread out state like California, and a bare-bones public transit system, the drunk driving accidents are going to pile up. The State of Texas had all these factors, which is why Texas lawmakers saw fit to arm the citizens with the ability to take bars, restaurants, nightclubs, and liquor stores to task for serving and selling alcohol in a dangerous manner. What do I mean when I say ‘dangerous’ service of alcohol? If a person walks into a bar with all the hallmark signs of drunkenness, it would be dangerous (and illegal in the State of Texas) to provide them with any additional alcohol. If the bar fails in their duty to refuse the customer service, the bar could be on the hook with the driver for any accident that happens at the hands of the alleged drunk driver.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
