Two Killed in Alleged Drunk Driving Accident in Ceres, California

CERCES, CA — Two people have died after a hit-and-run accident in Cerces, California on Saturday, May 3rd, 2014, according to a release from The Modesto Bee.

Police say two women were killed when a vehicle collided with another car while driving on Carpenter road around 8:30 in the evening Saturday. One of the vehicles is thought to have ignored a stop sign or signal.

Scene of the Accident

Two women died in the accident although it is not clear if they died on the scene, or if they were taken by EMS personnel to a nearby hospital where they died a short time later.

Officials think alcohol may have been to blame, and the driver of the offending vehicle, George Barbosa, may face criminal charges.

Representatives from the California Highway Patrol are currently investigating the accident.

The investigation is currently ongoing.

Commentary:

These are the accidents that only serve to underline California’s desperate need for adequate liquor liability laws. When you take a state that is as large and spread out as California, add bars, liquor stores, restaurants, and nightclubs, all while factoring the minimal public transit network, and you have an equation for a ton of drunk driving accidents. This is why in Texas, we have dram shop laws that hold these alcohol serving businesses to a high standard, and holds them liable for the accidents caused by patrons who leave their establishments.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
