SHERMAN, TX — A tractor-trailer driver was killed in a crash that was reported in Sherman, Texas on Tuesday, April 22nd, 2014, according to a news report from KXII.
Authorities from the Texas Highway Patrol believe 53-year-old Kenneth Carter was killed when the Tyson produce truck he was driving skidded off the road and crashed into a concrete bridge support pillar while driving on Highway 75 around 11:30 Tuesday evening.
Scene of the Accident
Kenneth Carter was pronounced dead on the scene when they arrived. He was alone in the truck at the time of the accident, and no other injuries were detailed in the news report.
Authorities expect to release more information about the accident in the coming days.
Commentary:
Single-vehicle tractor-trailer accidents are something I take very seriously because unfortunately I’m seeing more and more of these. While there is always a chance this accident was caused by driver distraction, lets take a look at another angle. Tractor-trailers and commercial vehicles in general are built from very similar systems that cars have, only are much more robust to account for the sheer size of the truck. As we all know, these systems on cars can fail or break down over time, and trucks are no different. If this is a large trucking company that maintains a massive fleet of trucks, there is always the chance that a repair was reported or known about, yet fell through the cracks for larger, seemingly more immediately necessary repairs. I’ve handled cases where trucks have driven the width of the entire country and back with a known fault before getting in an accident. If this is the case here, and I’m not saying that it is, the trucking company could be liable for the accident.
