The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a recall for 4.8 million Lasko Products box fans due to a possible motor electrical failure that may result in a fire risk. Lasko has received seven reports of fire but no reports of injury. Of the seven reported fire accidents two caused extensive property damage to a house and one caused damage to a barn. The affected fans were built in the U.S. and sold through merchandisers throughout the country from July 2002 to Dec. 2005. Consumers with affected models should immediately discontinue use. Lasko can be called at 877-445-1314 to request a fused plug safety adapter.

Large scale recalls can be fearful due to the fact that such a large number of faulty products may be in use throughout the country. Additionally not all affected consumers may hear about the apparent defect before an accident occurs. Product manufacturers bear a legal responsibility to ensure that their products do not pose an injurious hazard to consumers. When such incidents occur that may result in injury a product manufacturer can be held civilly liable for the results of their negligence in allowing such a product to be mass-released.
