Smithfield, RI – Shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday evening, an unidentified woman was injured in a rather wild car accident along I-295 in Smithfield, RI.
Sometimes you come across an accident so crazy, you just have to be thankful that no one was killed. This is one of those. What happened was that Wednesday afternoon, a woman was driving on the shoulder of I-295, when for some unknown reason, and without warning, she veered across 3 lanes of rush hour traffic. She struck a car in the center lane and then ricocheted a rock embankment in the median. Striking the embankment caused the woman’s car to flip and catch fire.
According to local officials, some of the eyewitnesses to the accident got out of their vehicles, rushed over to the woman’s car and pulled her out as the vehicle caught fire, while a small brush fire started in the median. Amazingly, the woman survived and was the only one injured in the accident. She was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and there is no word on her condition at this time.
Police are of course investigating the accident and have not commented on any charges, or put forth any theories as to why a driver would suddenly cut across 3 lanes of traffic.
