NEW LIMERICK, ME — One person was seriously hurt after a major seven-vehicle accident that involved three tractor-trailers in New Limerick, Maine on Thursday, February 19th, 2015. Local news said that the accident took place sometime Thursday afternoon.
One person was taken to the hospital after three tractor-trailers and four passenger cars collided for reasons currently under investigation while driving on Interstate 95. Investigators handling the accident say that a car slid off the road and somehow caused two tractor-trailers to collide. After those trucks collided, two passenger cars struck them. Moments later, a third semi-truck managed to avoid the initial accident but then struck two other passenger cars in the process.
One person was taken by EMS to Houltaon Regional Hospital where they were being treated for their injuries.
Maine State Police are helping local officials with the accident investigation and cleanup.

Commentary:
With a major multi-vehicle pileup like this one, especially where the roads are covered in snow and ice as the photos from the scene show, there are probably two major factors at-play. There could have been a million different things that caused the initial accident, but the secondary accidents were more than likely a product of either driving too fast for conditions, or following too closely. If the third tractor-trailer was following too closely, or driving too quickly in the adverse conditions, then the trucking company could bear a significant portion of the liability in the accident.
