Commentary:
Aviation accidents are handled very, very differently than your typical car accident. First off, every aircraft crash in the nation is handled by one agency. Can you imagine if every car accident in the country was handled by one agency? Even if the NYPD and their 30,000 officers handled every crash, the agency would still be tremendously overburdened. Now, currently the National Transportation Safety Board currently investigates every single aircraft crashe, maritime accident, railroad accident, and even some kinds of road accidents across the nation, and there are only 400 employees. As you can imagine, their backlog is probably quite long. This is why their investigations tend to take so long, and why many people seek independent investigations in order to get answers sooner, rather than later.
