Commentary
Despite the fact that 18-wheelers are built with an increasing number of accident avoidance systems, no system is ever going to replace a driver’s judgement. Because of the damage these vehicles are capable of, we hold these drivers to a higher standard. Not only do we expect them to be aware of and paying attention to their surroundings, but we expect them to be MORE aware and paying MORE attention than they might if they were driving a Dodge Dart. Now, it’s possible the reports are getting it wrong and we need to give the driver the benefit of the doubt, but if the reports are right, that’s not what happened here. The driver of the semitrailer incorrectly judged how much time he had to make his turn, or how close the Dodge was to him, and caused an accident. Now, two men are in the hospital. We need to ask if this was just a case of poor judgement, or if there was perhaps some other reason the driver made the decision he did. Details are still coming in, but right now it seems like there’s a lot the driver of the semitrailer needs to answer for.
