MCLENNAN COUNTY, TX — A single-vehicle accident left one man dead in Mclennan County, Texas on Friday, April 18th, 2014, according to a news report from KXXV.
Authorities believe Walter Courtney was killed when the vehicle he was driving is thought to have suffered a tire blowout while driving on Interstate 35 around 12:30 Friday afternoon.
Scene of the Accident
Walter Courtney was taken by EMS personnel to nearby Hillcrest Hospital where he died a short time after hjis arrival. No other injuries were detailed in the news report.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
The news article mentions a tire blowout, which should set off some alarms. First of all, how old was this tire? If the tire was brand new, investigators may be looking at a defective product. Many people are surprised to learn that tires are not one solid piece of rubber, but are two parts glued together, the tread, and the sidewall. Ive handled cases where the glue that connects the tread to the sidewall dissolved under heat and caused a blowout, resulting in a serious accident. If this turns out to be the case in this accident, the tire manufacturer may bear at least some portion of the liability.
