School Bus Accident in Houston, TX, Injures 18 on Highway 59

Houston, TX — Eighteen students were injured in a school bus accident in Houston, Texas, on Tuesday, March 17, 2015. The accident happened on Highway 59, near the intersection of Rankin Road, around 2:30 in the afternoon.

According to local sources, the accident was between a school bus and an 18-wheeler. At this time, it’s not clear exactly how the accident took place. The school bus was full of students who were heading to Johnson Space Center for a field trip.

Reports say that in all, 18-people were taken to local hospitals following the crash. Eight were taken to Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital, and another four were taken to Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital. Of those hospitalized, many of them were released later that day.

The names of those involved, as well as the extent of their injuries, wasn’t immediately available.

Because we don’t have details on exactly what happened here, we can only talk about these sorts of accidents in general. Let’s look at a few things. If the accident here happened because of something the 18-wheeler did, then the trucking company is going to be responsible. Although they’ll try and blame as much as they can on the bus, because that’s what trucking companies do. If the accident happened because of the school bus, then one of two people will be responsible for it. Either the school district, or the company that owns the bus. The school district would be responsible if the bus was owned and operated by the state. Now, any claim against a municipally-owned entity is going to be a little harder to deal with, as the government doesn’t like the idea of people suing it. There are paperwork deadlines that have to be strictly followed, as well as limits to the amount one receive in compensation for injuries. If the bus company is privately owned, then this would work much more like a regular claim filed after an accident like this, as the company that operates the bus would be privately-owned, and not owned by the state.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
