Weston, FL — Allegedly, failed brakes may have been the cause of a serious accident involving a semi-truck this past Thursday, March 12, 2015. Officers with the FHP said that a semi-truck crashed into the I-75 Bridge at the Bonaventure Boulevard overpass and the driver claimed that his brakes failed.
This happened at about 9:00 a.m. on Thursday morning, they said. The semi-truck driver was headed east on the I-75 access road (State Road 84) that morning when his brakes apparently failed and the truck lost control. It swerved off the side of the road and crashed into the I-75 bridge, doing major front-end damage to the cab.
The driver was injured and taken to a hospital via medical helicopter. He was not identified, but the news said he was 55 years old.

Commentary:
I don’t know what kind of details the news reports aren’t including here, but if this truck driver’s brakes really did fail, then I’d say the manufacturer of those brakes may be liable. At the end of the day, the truck driver is entrusting his life to those brakes, and if they fail, then someone should be answerable to that. It’s a good thing that this accident wasn’t more serious, because a brake failure can easily kill several people if the semi-truck can’t slow down or stop.
The key would be to have an investigation done ASAP because the standard one done by the highway patrol or local police isn’t going to be concerned with the mechanical nuances of a semi-truck, just whether any traffic laws were broken.
