Amary Milan Injured in U-Haul Truck Accident on Southern Blvd. in Bronx, NY

Bronx. NY — Police identified Amary Milan as the 17-year old boy who was severely injured when he was hit by a U-Haul truck in the Bronx, on Friday, March 13, 2015. The accident took place at the intersection of Southern Blvd. and Barretto Street, around 8:45 in the morning.

Police say that Milan was crossing the street on his way to school when a U-Haul truck being driven by 36-year old Efram Rodriguez crashed into him. Police say that Rodriguez was found to have taken methadone before getting behind the wheel of truck that day, and had only hours earlier been involved in an accident where he struck a car and kept driving. Rodriguez’s driver’s license had been revoked after more than 15 suspensions. Some reports say that Rodriguez had stolen the U-Haul involved in the accident.

Emergency workers rushed Milan to Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center. At last report, he had been listed in critical condition.

Police arrested Milan and charged him with DUI, as well as reckless driving and assault. The investigation into the accident continues.

Police reported that Rodriguez’s driver’s license had been revoked after previously having been suspended 16 times. That’s incredible. Now, if, after that, U-Haul somehow still let the man rent one of their trucks, that’s on them and they without a doubt need to be held responsible for that. Other reports have claimed that the U-Haul involved in this crash was stolen. If that’s the case, then that really absolves U-Haul of any blame in the matter. There was nothing they could have done to stop this. How this accident is handled going forward is going to depend on how Rodriguez got behind the wheel of that truck that day.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
