Caro, MI — There was a serious accident involving a semi-trick and a car along M-81 this past Sunday (March 8, 2015) that left the man driving the car with injuries. Police said that a semi-truck driving along M-81 lost control and swerved into oncoming traffic, where it crashed into another car.
This was at about 10:30 p.m. on Sunday night, just south of Caro on M-81. According to the reports, the semi-truck was driving west along M-81 when the driver began to lose control of the trailer it was hauling.
The trailer started to sway and eventually ended up in the wrong lanes of traffic, where it was hit by an oncoming man in a car. The man was trapped inside his car after the wreck and had to be extricated and taken to a hospital. His name and condition aren’t being released right now.
The semi-truck driver wasn’t harmed, but police are looking into why his trailer lost control that night. So far, no charges have been filed.

Commentary:
Without knowing all the details here, it’s hard to tell what really happened or what caused the trailer to lose control. However, I know this: in most circumstances and situations, the truck driver is responsible for controlling his trailer. Barring something freakish like a sudden storm or tornado, and assuming this driver’s trailer was properly hooked up to his semi, he should have been able to control things a little better. Was he driving too fast? Had he taken his eyes off the road and started to swerve a bit, gradually losing control? These are questions that need to be answered because, if this driver’s negligence is found to be the cause of the accident, then he and the trucking company he works for may be considered liable for the damage done here.
