Nicolas Garcia Killed on I-20 by Semi-Truck Accident in Weatherford, TX

Weatherford, TX — There was a serious accident reported southwest of Weatherford this past Friday that killed a young man from North Richland Hills, 20-year old Nicolas Garcia. Police said that Garcia was killed along I-20 after his pickup truck was in a head-on accident with a semi-truck.

This happened along I-20, near the exit for Brock. The Texas DPS troopers reported that Garcia had been driving his Ford F-150 pickup truck west on I-20 last Friday (February 27, 2015) at about 9:15 a.m. when he suddenly lost control.

His truck appeared to swerve into the median and into the eastbound lanes of traffic, where it was hit head-on by a passing semi-truck. That driver, 43-year old Carlos Bright, wasn’t harmed by the impact, but it killed Nicolas Garcia.

Police said that they are working on their investigation, but noted that weather and speed could have been factors.

Commentary:

While it’s certainly possible that weather/speed caused this wreck, I think that an investigation here should also include the pickup truck involved. Was it in working order, or did something possible malfunction and cause it to lose control? I’ve handled a lot of similar cases in my career and I’ve often found that the news reports don’t do a very good job of reporting all the details and after a closer look, there’s usually more to be found. All that to say that I don’t think anyone should just jump to the conclusion that this young man caused his own accident until all the relevant information is available.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
