Commentary
I’ve seen pictures of this accident, and the cab of the truck that the driver had to be extricated from is completely demolished. Unfortunately, these trucks aren’t nearly as strong as some make them out to be. If a tractor-trailer crashes into a Honda Civic, then of course the Honda is going to be torn apart. But if the truck crashes into anything substantial, like a bridge support pillar, or another tractor-trailer, it’s going to get beat up. Anytime I see an accident like this I have to wonder if it needed to be as bad as it was if the truck was just built sturdier. The trucking industry does a lot of great things, but this is definitely one area in which its drivers have really been let down.
