Alleged DUI Accident Injures Teenage Girl on Richmond Road in Williamsburg, VA

Williamsburg, VA — A teenage girl was sent to the hospital after her vehicle was hit by a driver police believe was intoxicated at the time. The accident happened in Williamsburg, Virginia, on Saturday, February 14, 2015.

Police were called to the intersection of Richmond Road and Route 199 around 6:30 in the evening to find that Margarito Santos-Andres had crashed his vehicle into the back of a teenage girl driving a Toyota minivan.

The force of the collision caused the girl to rear-end the vehicle in front of her. After the crash, emergency workers transported her to Riverside Regional Medical Center. Officials say that her injuries aren’t considered life threatening.

Police charged Santos-Andres with DUI and placed him under arrest. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.

I have to wonder if a bar was involved in this accident. In other states, bars are forbidden to sell alcohol to those who are obviously intoxicated. If a person is over-served, and then goes out and gets into an accident, the bar can be held liable for it. And rightly so. If a bar refuses to cut someone off when they’ve obviously had enough to drink, and then that person goes out and gets into an accident, they should be held accountable for that. Unfortunately, Virginia doesn’t have those protections in place. Every time I see an accident like this I have to wonder if it could have been avoided if those protections were there.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
