Richland City, IN — Two people were injured in a school bus accident in Richland City, Indiana, on Tuesday, February 10, 2015. The accident happened on Highway 161, about two miles north of Highway 66.
It was about 3:15 in the afternoon when Hilary Coffey was traveling in her Cadillac Escalade along 161 and failed to notice a school bus ahead of her that had stopped to unload children. She crashed into the rear left corner of the bus, which trapped Amanda Smith, her passenger, inside the SUV.
Emergency workers called to the scene had to work to extricate Smith from the vehicle. Both Coffey and Smith were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital, although there’s been no update on their conditions.
The driver of the bus and the students who were aboard at the time were not hurt. The accident is still being investigated.

It’s important to remember that, in an accident like this, a driver is going to be responsible for his passengers. A driver has an obligation to create and maintain a safe environment for those he’s transporting, and if he fails in that duty, and his passengers are injured because of it, he can be held liable for those injuries.
