Millstadt, IL — A woman was hospitalized after her pickup was hit by a grain truck in Millstadt, Illinois, on Thursday, February 5, 2015. The accident took place on Highway 163, around 6:00 in the afternoon.

Police say that 60-year old Cecelia Dunlap was pulling onto 163 from the driveway of the Spring Haven Stables when she was hit by a grain truck that was headed north. The collision sent both vehicles in a 15-foot ditch on the side of the road.

The driver of the grain truck was identified as 60-year old Leon Kreher. He was not injured in the accident.

Emergency workers extricated Dunlap from her truck and transported her to a local hospital. Officials say that her injuries are not life-threatening. The accident is still under investigation.

Commentary

I have a few questions after reading about this accident. Did the victim have a clear line of site on the road so that she could see could see any oncoming vehicles? Did the driver of the grain truck have any time to react once the victim came up onto the road. Sometimes a driver has no time to react to an accident like this. The law realizes that and makes allowances for it. However, a driver will sometimes have notice and not take advantage of it. Why that is varies. Sometimes they’re just not paying any attention to the road in front of them. Whatever the reason, if it’s found that the grain truck contributed in any way to the accident they could still be held at least partially liable for the accident. Hopefully the investigation into the crash will be able to shed some light on exactly what happened here.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
