Commentary
Whenever I hear about a semi-truck rear-ending someone, what that says to me is that the driver of the truck wasn’t paying attention. A semi driver is going to be sitting ten feet in the air. They’re going to have a perfect view of the road ahead of them. There’s no reason they shouldn’t be able to see a vehicle driving directly ahead of them. So, the question becomes, if they’re not watching the road ahead of them, what are they watching? Unfortunately, trucking companies are notorious for defending accidents, even the ones for which they’re at fault. Proving a case like this takes evidence, and that means a complete and thorough investigation of the accident scene. It means speaking with witnesses and collecting the driving data from the truck’s Electronic Control Module. These are the things an independent investigation is perfectly primed to handle. Unfortunately, police are only concerned with seeing whether or not any laws were broken. If there were, they’ll cite someone and move on. Helping victims isn’t their prerogative, so they don’t concern themselves with it. Because of this, a police investigation isn’t really suited to a task like this, and those involved in these accidents will need to look elsewhere.
