Ithaca, NY — An accident involving a garbage truck sent three people to the hospital on Wednesday, January 28, 2015. The accident happened on Route 79, around 8:15 in the morning.

According to local sources, the pickup truck was headed east on Route 79 when it hit the corner of a parked garbage truck. The pickup sustained heavy front end damage, and a woman inside had to be extricated by emergency workers.

At least one of the victims was taken to Cayuga Medical Center.

Reports say that the driver of the garbage truck was outside, loading cans into the vehicle at the time of the accident. He was not injured in the crash.

The names of those involved in the accident were not released. It’s unclear if the garbage truck involved was illegally parked.

I was once involved in an accident in which a man driving down the highway was forced off the road by another vehicle. An 18-wheeler had parked on the side of the road, and as the man was coming off, he crashed into the back of it and died. Now, in the course of the investigation, we found the the truck driver had parked on the side of the road to relieve himself. He was illegally parked, and ultimately found liable for the accident. The reason for that was, the victim wouldn’t have died if the parked had not of been parked there.

Let’s look at the garbage truck in this accident. Reports say it was parked on the side of the road. The street where the accident happened looks to be a residential area. Was the truck illegally parked? Was it coming out past the shoulder and into the road? If so, it could be found liable for the accident. Hopefully, the investigation into the crash will reveal more details over the next few days.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
