McKinney, TX — Yesterday afternoon, a 9-year old girl was sent to the hospital inc critical condition after being hit by a suspected drunk drive in downtown McKinney. The young girl remains in critical condition as of Tuesday and the driver who struck her, 54-year old William Weir, has been charged with intoxication assault.

This happened on Monday afternoon, around lunch time. According to the news reports, Weir was driving along Louisiana Street (in the Historic McKinney Square downtown) when he crashed into a 9-year old girl who was walking in the street.

There were many witnesses to the accident, who said that the young girl struck her head on the ground after being thrown about 10 feet by Weir’s pickup truck. Police arrived at the scene and arrested Weir after they suspected that he was under the influence of alcohol.

He was taken to the Collin County Jail and is being processed. Allegedly, Weir has charges for marijuana against him as well, but it’s not clear if those are related to this accident or not.

Commentary:

I wish I could say that I’m surprised that someone would be drunk in the middle of the day, but I’m not. I’ve seen all manner of accidents involving alcohol, some of which even involved people who were still drunk the next morning from a previous night of drinking. Now, I’m wondering if this man had being drinking at one of the nearby businesses or restaurants there in the downtown square? Assuming that the news reports are correct and that alcohol is a factor here, do the police know where this man had come from?

The bottom line here is that if this man had been at a bar/restaurant there in McKinney and had been served the point of intoxication in the middle of the day, then I think both this driver and whoever served him need to be punished together as accomplices in the same crime.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
