Commentary:
There are plenty of questions to ask about this accident before we blame victims. First of all, were the tractor-trailer’s brake lights working? Were they clean and free of road dust so that drivers behind them could see them illuminate? These brake lights are connected by a sole electrical line that can easily become dislodged, or can be improperly connected. If the lights were not working, there may have been no way for the rear driver to know that the truck was slowing or stopping.
Additionally, I’d be having a deep look inside the van itself. If the fire was the result of a poor design or sloppy construction, then the manufacturer of the vehicle could bear a portion of the liability.
