Aldine, TX — A member of the Little York Volunteer Fire Department was hospitalized after an accident in Aldine, Texas, on Thursday, January 15, 2015. The accident happened at the Little York Fire Station, in the 10400 block of Airline Drive.
Joey Spitzenberger was sitting on the rear bumper of a fire engine as another member of the fire department was parking a pickup truck. Local news sources say that the pickup lost traction, causing the truck to slide into the rear of the fire truck, with Spitzenberger still sitting on the bumper.
Witnesses to the accident say that Spitzenberger was fortunate that paramedics were already on the scene. After he was stabilized, he was taken to an area hospital by medical helicopter.
Doctors say that he suffered two cracked ribs, as well as bruises on his leg and lower back. He was released from the hospital after about two hours.
The accident is still being investigated. At this point, it isn’t clear if the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been notified of what happened. No one else was reported injured.

All I can say here is wow. I don’t think it’s often that a victim walks away from an accident like this with so few injuries. Honestly, I wish I knew a little more about what happened here. News reports say that the accident happened because the truck involved lost its traction on wet cement and slid into the fire truck. How fast was the truck traveling at the time? If I’m only traveling five miles an hour so as I drive into my garage, I don’t expect my car to start sliding because it can’t hold its traction. I’ve seen similar accidents in the past that happened because a vehicle had defective tires, and I wonder if something similar happened here.
