Torivio Tovar Killed by Semi-Truck Accident on Highway 40 near Craig, CO

Craig, CO — There was an accident last Friday, December 20, near the rural town of Craig that killed a young man, 17-year old Torivio Tovar. Police said that Tovar was killed after his pickup truck was in a wreck with a semi-truck.

This happened that Friday afternoon, the news reports, in the eastbound lanes of Highway 40. Tovar had been driving his Ford F-250 pickup truck west along Highway 40, just a few miles west of Craig, when he started to lose control (potentially due to ice on the road).

His truck veered across the center lines and went into oncoming traffic, where it collided head-on with an eastbound semi-truck. The accident caused Tovar’s Ford to skid back into the westbound lanes and drive off the shoulder of the highway. Tovar was killed in the accident, though the truck driver (Jeffery Higgs) wasn’t harmed. Police said he was taking water to Craig when the wreck happened.

Ice on the roads may have been a factor here, but police said they need to investigate some more before releasing information. As of the end of the month, they hadn’t posted any more updates.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
