One Injured in Trench Collapse on Moses Lane in Roane County, Tennessee

ROANE COUNTY, TN — One man was taken to the hospital after a serious construction accident that happened in Roane County, Tennessee on Friday, December 12th, 2014. The article released by WBIR said that the accident happened around 4:00 Friday afternoon.

Police have said that they have reason to believe that one man was hurt when the trench he was working in collapsed for reasons currently under investigation while working at a construction site on Moses Lane. Police said that the employee was a worker for Danson Construction and were doing sewer work at the time of the accident.

One worker was in the trench when it collapsed, and he was taken by helicopter to University of Tennessee Medical Center where he was being treated for unspecified injuries.

The investigation into the accident is currently being handled by local police and fire departments.

Commentary:

I see two possible scenarios with this accident. Either the company the victim worked for was responsible for digging the trench before it collapsed, in which case the victim would more than likely be paired with a workers’ compensation solution through their employer, or there was a third party that dug the trench like contractors, etc. If a third party dug the trench, then there is a very real possibility the victim would have a claim against them, and not the workers’ compensation through their employer. This tends to be much better for victims of work accidents, because workers’ compensation solutions tend to be the very barest minimum in compensation, something that tends to benefit the employer, not the victim in the long run.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
