Commentary:
The news reports didn’t clearly illustrate what happened in the accident, only that the tractor-trailer hit two other vehicles. My guess? The tractor-trailer rear-ended the vehicles, but I could be wrong. Tractor-trailer drivers have been getting more and more distracted by the technology that is being packed into their trucks. I’ve even seen truck drivers using both their personal, and work cell phones concurrently. On top of that, the early morning hour the accident took place makes me wonder how long the truck driver was behind the wheel before the accident. If the trucker was distracted by his phone or GPS, or was simply dazed out or nodded off from driving too long, there would be records of the hours and evidence in the cell phone that proves this. If the trucker nodded off, or was texting at the wheel, then the company that trusted him with an 80,000 pound truck needs to answer for it. Period.
