Grifton, NC — There was a serious accident involving a commercial semi-truck outside of Grifton this past Saturday, December 13, 2014. Police identified the truck driver who was injured as 36-year old Raleigh resident Mabiala Maurain Mabiala — who is originally from Africa.
Mabiala was injured on Saturday morning after his semi-truck was in an accident and caught fire. The specific details are still being sorted out, but it appears that the accident happened near the Contentnea Creek, just off NC-11.
Mabiala was driving his 10-wheeler semi-truck along the highway on Saturday at about 6:00 a.m. when something happened and he crashed into a side guardrail. His semi-truck then went off the ice of the highway and rolled down an embankment, flipping over in the process.
The truck caught fire as it came to a rest, trapping and burning Mabiala inside the cab. He was received by some Good Samaritans who were passing by and noticed the burning truck. Once rescued, he was airlifted to a nearby hospital.
Often times, fires that break out in semi-trucks or other commercial vehicles are indicative of something gone wrong in the engine or even a malfunction. However, there’s no indication as to what might have caused this. Local authorities are still investigating.
At the last update, Mabiala was being treated for severe burns on the lower part of his body.
